As a result of a retirement after a long, meaningful career in education, Flint Hill School in Oakton, Virginia, 15 miles west of Washington, DC, seeks an energetic professional to join its college counseling staff. The staff consists of three counselors and a part-time assistant. The College Counseling Program at Flint Hill enjoys strong support from the school community and is an important part of school life.
Each counselor works with between 40 and 45 students in each class and assumes some collateral duties within the school community but outside the office; teaching/coaching is possible but not required. Typical college counseling duties include meeting with junior and senior students and parents, providing suggestions and advice to families throughout the college search and application process, assisting with the coordination of evening programs, leading small group sessions with juniors and seniors, writing the official School letter of support for assigned seniors and meeting with/maintaining good relationships with college admission colleagues. There is strong support for professional development and attending regional and national professional conferences is encouraged as is participation in college counselor tours and independent visits to college campuses.
The ideal candidate will have:
1) 3 - 5 years of professional work experience, including college-level admission experience
2) An impeccable sense of integrity
3) A thorough understanding of the application process
4) The ability to prioritize multiple projects and responsibilities and complete them on time and well
5) The ability to write coherently, correctly, and professionally
6) Strong listening and interpersonal skills
7) The ability to speak well to both large and small groups
