Job Title:                  Upper School College Counselor

Responsible to:     Director of College Counseling

Position Summary:  The Haverford School, an all-boys JrK-12 independent school with 1,000 students in Haverford, PA, seeks a full-time, experienced College Counselor to start in July, 2012.  Salary is commensurate with experience. 

Working closely with other members of the College Counseling staff to guide students through the college admissions process, this College Counselor assists with all operations of the office, works closely with students and parents, is responsible for guiding 35 to 40 students in each of grades ten through twelve through the college search and application processes, and serves as an academic advisor.  The position is for ten months per year with only occasional summer duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

*    Counsel students (approximately one-third of each graduating class) and their parents from the middle of sophomore year through the end of senior year as they research and apply to colleges

*    Meet with students and parents regularly to discuss college options, curricular planning, and standardized test plans

*    Assist in teaching the College Seminar for juniors

*    Write recommendations for designated counselees

*    Continue to develop relationships with college and university admissions offices by meeting with college representatives, visiting college campuses, and attending regional and national conferences

*    Actively participate in regional, state, and national professional organizations

*    Advocate for counselees to colleges and universities

*    Fully utilize the resources of Naviance to facilitate the college search and application processes

*    Compile and disseminate scholarship and summer program information

*    Help organize and run student, parent, and faculty information events on campus

*    Participate in faculty and staff meetings

*    Fulfill other school duties and responsibilities as deemed appropriate for the position.

*    Serve as academic advisor (non-college) for a small group of students 

 

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications

*    Bachelor's Degree required, Masters preferred

*    At least five years of experience in a school college counseling office or selective college admissions office. 

*    Effective communicator, both verbally and in writing

*    Enthusiastic interest in motivating and mentoring high school students

*    A role model for students

*    Ability to meet consistently all obligations and deadlines

*    Ability to comply with the requirements of a standard work week

*    A gentle demeanor and a good sense of humor
