The Hockaday School, TX

Associate Director of College Counseling

The Hockaday School seeks an Associate Director of College Counseling for the school year 2012-2013.

The Hockaday School is an independent, day and boarding school for girls pre-kindergarten through grade12. Hockaday provides a college preparatory education to girls of strong potential and diverse backgrounds who may be expected to assume positions of responsibility and leadership in a rapidly changing world. With an enrollment of more than 1,000 students, Hockaday is the nation's largest girls' school. It was founded almost a century ago and continues to build on its original Four Cornerstones: Scholarship, Character, Courtesy and Athletics.

Hockaday teachers strongly support single-gender education and understand how girls learn best. They value and respect their colleagues; further School-wide, divisional, and departmental goals; and demonstrate a commitment to the ideals expressed in the Tenets of Faculty Excellence. The Associate Director is one of three counselors in the college counseling office and will work closely with approximately 45 students beginning in their junior year until their graduation.  Responsibilities will include:

  • Counseling students and parents in the college admission process
  • Establishing relationships with college admission officers on behalf of the school and the students
  • Writing a letter of recommendation for each assigned senior
  • Presenting workshops and meetings for parents and students and, on occasion, for faculty
  • Participating in the life of the school through such additional activities as serving as faculty advisor to a group of students or as a faculty sponsor to the junior or senior class

The school's administration endorses professional development for the staff, participation in professional organizations for college admissions locally and nationally, and visits to college and university campuses nationally.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of a bachelor's degree and experience in selective college admissions as well as previous counseling experience.  Applicants should possess strong interpersonal skills, be effective oral and written communicators, and enjoy working with students and parents individually and in group settings.  They should understand thoroughly the application process at public and private colleges and universities, current trends in admission, and financial aid.

Applicants should e-mail a cover letter, resume, references, and 2-3 sample recommendation letters to:
