College Counseling Position
The college counselor is a member of the Upper School faculty and reports to the Director of College Counseling. The college counselor works as a team with the Registrar and College Counseling Assistant. Each college counselor is responsible for the college search and selection process for half of each graduating class. The graduating classes at Newman range from seventy-five to ninety students. Included is working with the college counseling team to offer appropriate group programs for parents, students, and faculty. In addition to college counseling responsibilities, the counselor serves as an upper school advisor and participates fully in the life of the School including supporting students in their co-curricular lives.
The ideal candidate will have meaningful and substantial experience in the college counseling process, either on the high school side or the college side or both. Strong writing skills are a requirement for the important task of composing the meaningful and personal recommendation letters written on behalf of Newman students. Public speaking skills also are essential for the position.
An important dimension of the position is working closely and collaboratively with Newman parents understanding that all parents bring a wide range of perspectives and expectations to the college counseling process. Organizational skills and an ability to meet deadlines are critical to the position. The counselor also must demonstrate a commitment to improvement through professional development by keeping abreast of current trends in college admissions, attending national and regional conferences, and visiting colleges. Depending on the level of experience of the candidate, Newman may consider offering the position of Associate Director or Co-Director.
