Assistant/Associate Director of College Guidance
The Webb Schools seek to add a second full-time college counselor in the 2012-2013 school year. The person selected for this position will join the current Director as an integral member of our college counseling team that also includes a full-time executive assistant (support staff position). This person will also serve as a faculty member for The Webb Schools and may be asked to teach one course each semester as needed in an area of expertise with the supervision and support from the Director of Academic Affairs.
The counselor reports to the Director of College Guidance and as a faculty member will also report to the Director of Academic Affairs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
* Work with the college counseling team in planning and executing a college counseling curriculum that promotes best practices and meets the needs of Webb students and parents in all divisions of the school.
* Counsel approximately 100 seniors with the help of the Director of College Guidance as they apply to college.
* Write letters of recommendation for assigned counselees.
* Take the lead in meeting with students and parents of underclass students (grades 9-11) to answer general questions about college admissions, academic preparation, and other issues as they anticipate the college process.
* Stay up-to-date on current trends in college admissions, and participate in professional development opportunities, as well as visit colleges.
* Will assist in overall academic planning and advising for all grades levels, while also serving as a faculty advisor for a group of 6-9 students, providing guidance in academic, extracurricular, social, and personal areas and serve as the school's key liaison to parents.
* Attend all faculty meetings, department meetings, and other meetings as required.
* Attend all school functions: chapels, assemblies, class meetings, as well as special events.
* Complete academic reports, advisor letters, and other forms of academic communication in a timely, professional manner.
* Promote the development of honor, character, and leadership in all dealings with students, including enforcing school rules.
* Pursue opportunities for professional growth on an annual basis. And in general support The Webb Schools' academic and boarding program as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
The candidate will have a bachelor's degree (advanced degree preferred) from an accredited college or university, knowledge of independent schools, and experience in selective college admissions or college counseling, or a combination of both. Excellent organizational skills are required, as are a sense of humor and the ability to work as part of a collaborative administrative team that values each member's voice. The ability to multi-task, maintain flexibility and take independent initiative in an energetic office environment with efficiency and effectiveness are essential to success in this position. In addition, exceptional writing skills as well as interpersonal, communication and organizational skills are required.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
A current California driver's license will be required. A background check is required and must be successfully completed before employment can begin.
OTHER SKILLS
College Guidance members must be:
* Able to communicate effectively with students, parents, faculty, staff, and administrators.
* Knowledgeable practitioners of college guidance.
* Technologically literate (familiarity with Naviance is preferred) and able to guide and direct students' use of technology.
