Welcome to ACCIS!

ACCIS 2009 Summer Institute Attendees @ Colorado College

Dear Visitor,

Greetings! It is with great excitement that I welcome you to the new and evolving web presence for ACCIS: the Association for College Counselors in Independent Schools. As an organization, we are guided by a desire to support the essential work of college counselors in independent schools by affirming our unique leadership role in educational communities where we serve the young people in our care.

We are excited about this year's plans.  The Summer Institute held in June 2009 at Colorado College was a great success, and our third annual Summer Institute will be held in Atlanta, hosted by Emory University and Agnes Scott College, in June 2010.  We will be updating the members section soon with summaries, documents, and photos like the one above from the 2009 Summer Institute.  Future programming in conjunction with other local and regional associations is listed on our Events link above.

These are exciting times! As Executive Director, I invite you to join us. Email me with questions or suggestions!

Sincerely,

Marty Elkins Executive Director

2009 Summer Institute @ Colorado College: A Success!

Over the course of three beautiful days in Colorado Springs, 92 college counselors from 76 different independent schools came together from all corners of the United States to learn more about how to support the students in their care.  The second annual ACCIS “Meeting of Independent Minds” featured compelling speakers, small group discussions, social gatherings, campus tours, and Rocky Mountain hikes, all designed to foster learning and collegiality.  In addition to these offerings, counselors were also able to learn more about host site Colo

Program Vision & Call For Volunteers

To the Membership of ACCIS,

Are you looking for ways that our organization can serve you? Or you can serve our organization? As ACCIS moves into its third year as a professional group dedicated to supporting counselors working with students in independent schools, we hope to expand our program. We think we’re ready to take the next steps – and we solicit your help!

For these first two years, the ACCIS Summer Institute has been our one high-profile event, and the one clear answer to the question, “What exactly does ACCIS do?” A lot more has happened behind the scenes, of course, but now we are ready to make a bigger impact in the world of college counseling and in our schools.

Frankly some of the ideas here are exploratory – whether we can pull them off depends on members stepping up to make them happen. Our sense is that a good number of members are looking to contribute to the organization in a substantive way, and these projects could allow you to do so. If any of these projects do interest you, please sign up on the online “Volunteer Survey.”
